Before I get into what exactly is a professional photographer and why you should hire one, let me tell you a story...
On June 18th, 2005 I married the love of my life. We didn’t make much then and everything for our wedding was on an extremely strict budget. My parents, and his, did not help us with the much of the expense, we had to do it almost on our own. I had always dreamed of a big beautiful and glamorous wedding and I got it. We married in Savannah, Georgia at Forsyth Park right in front of the Forsyth fountain. Our reception was at the Savannah Yacht Club. Most of my budget went to pay for the chair rentals, food for the reception and several other things. Photography was just as expensive then as it is now and it was on the bottom of the expense list. I had a photographer; she was a client of mine that I sold a house to when I was a real estate agent. I paid her $50 plus a room for the night. And BOY do I regret it! Although she was a great lady, she acted more like a guest at my wedding than a photographer. There were times I had to remind her to keep taking pictures. She missed a lot from my big beautiful day. And if I could go back in time I would have done things differently, I would have hired a professional photographer! Why hire a professional photographer? Because I don’t want you to look back and say, I wish I had, like I do.
So exactly what is a professional wedding photographer? A professional wedding photographer knows the ins and outs of their camera. They have the skills and knowledge to capture your memories in the best quality photographs possible. This is not someone who has a decent digital camera and gets a couple hundred dollars cash to get some snapshots at a friend’s wedding. A professional has to be as good at running a business as they are at photographing a wedding. This includes the use of good contracts/agreements, clear concise information and pricing, well-articulated expectations (for both parties), and good communication. They will come to a wedding with a large array of equipment. This will include, a minimum of two professional camera bodies, several lenses, alternative lighting sources and many many other items to ensure that they can get the best possible photograph out of any situation. Your wedding is a day of joy and excitement. You have so much going on and do not need the added worry that your friend/uncle/buddy is irreparably destroying the once in a lifetime memories he/she is supposed to be capturing. I get that hiring a professional wedding photographer is a large part of your wedding expense. But when the Uncle Joe forgets to capture your first dance or heavens, your first kiss and the only wedding pictures you have are unflattering or out of focus, you’ll be glad you spent that extra money. I’m all about finding ways to save money, and there are lots of ways you can do so. But if you only splurge on one thing for your wedding, please LET IT BE PHOTOGRAPHY.
